It should be a nice tank...I have a lot...Parrots...Cichlids...Corys...Frontosa...etc. They really need a bigger home...So I think this will be good for everyone!

can the neighbor adopt the CUC also? One can never have too many - well, I guess technically you can, but I'm sure you can find them a home.

Broke down the tank today, and saved at least 90% of the clean up crew. They are in my 3 gal Pico tank with a live rock that has a lot of GHA, and sand. They are all doing well. My neighbor did adopt my Cardinal. I think I found the problem, but don't know the cause. As I was scooping out the last of the sand, I got to the right front corner and found this really gray/black sand that had a horrid smell. Never experienced this before, so I think that this is where the problem originated. When I say horrible, I mean death warmed over. Any suggestions on what caused this pocket of NASTY sand and smell?

Also went to LFS today and spent 270.00 on 3 new 250w 10k halide bulbs, and 2 48" true blue T5HO bulbs for supplement. I think that will look more natural in a fresh than 15k 400w.

Rob, I'm sure what you were smelling was sulfur. Most likely, something got covered up there and created a gas pocket which would have been leaching sulfur and killing fish. I had this happen 6 or 7 years ago when I restarted an old 55 gallon tank I had. I didn't do anything with the gravel bed. I just filled er up and started putting fish in the tank. Everything I added died over the course of a couple of days if they lasted that long. I even lost damsels. As soon as I replaced the bed, the deaths stopped. This is strictly why I replaced my sand bed this time rather than trying to reuse the old one. I'm sorry about this buddy. I hate the fact that you are bowing out. I wish we could keep ya in it. Stuff like this happens but it seems like once a tank gets REALLY established, it gets much easier.

Daniel...I think you might have nailed it. I told my wife the same thing, that there had to be gas in there to create that smell. Thanks for the input. If anyone else has ideas I would really like to hear it. I cannot be the first one to experience it. Sulpher does seem like the smell I had.

It's almost guaranteed that is what you had. I'm sorry about that buddy but I have seen it happen. Thats why I stir the CRAP outta my sandbed.

THIS is why I got rid of my DSB for a much more shallow CC bed, after only a few weeks into my journey, BEFORE this happened to my tank!!

This pretty much NEVER happens when shallow substrate.

I don't know for sure, but I'll bet it had alot to do with it!

I know people like them, but I would never recommend a DSB, and have asked build planners to rethink it and research it- I did and nixed it quick.

My CC bed now averages about 1.5 inches. And my fish, hermits, goby, etc. keep it pretty stirred up.

And don't take my rant wrong please, How could you have known, and it may not even be the culprit, etc.
