In a twenty an itty bitty two fishes mag float is all that is needed, size of a 1/2 dollar. Perhaps the size of my tank is both a blessing and a hindrance. Easy maintenance, shallow rimless makes access incredibly easy, but when you do put your hands in a smaller volume of water you see the instant result when all the sps close up.

I'd say the easy maintenance is probably a seasoned hobbyist talking... I would be afraid of a nano or a tank that small... I don't think I'd be good on a system with a tighter swing. Unless I knew what door I was opening up, I could prepare for it.

Then you add SPS to the nano setup and still call it easy! :p

There are pretty easy ways to prevent swings in a nano tank...ATO prevents salinity swings, skimmer intake outdoors has prevented pH swings, auto doser prevents calc, alk, and mag swings. Media such as carbon, GFO, and purigen help reduce the effect of any other potential swings.

Other than me putting my hands in there to move stuff and tinker. my tank is auto pilot. Oh and feeding...haven't gotten an auto feeder yet, though I don't plan to.

well on my 46 that's been running for around 7months now I find myself once a week or so used to be almost everyday to clean glass or move things but now that its at the 7 month mark everything is settling in and usually Sunday mornings I go in and do everything on my list

now the 38 my hands are in it almost everyday trying to get everything how I want it the glass gets dirty awfully fast still and that's the number one thing that bothers me I get most with a mag float but the corners are rounded so doesn't leave me much choice but to go in and clean it by hand

Every day my hands are in my tank. Just to feed I place them in it. It has never crossed my mind that putting my hands in would disrupt anything. Then again I am dealing with a little over 300 gallons of water.

In short, I dont think it matters much or at all.

Almost broke the streak today. Thought about moving my one hermit to the sump area.

Now if my tank were on newer I would probably be tempted to put my tinker too.

Does the film algae growth on the glass grow fast, daily cleaning? You can do something about that.
As usual Civic your right, in the long run it probably will not have an impact that anyone would care to notice. I am still a believe though that in smaller volumes of water it does have more of an impact though. As posted earlier as soon as my hand hits the water the sps close up.

Day 5 ;), day is not over yet though, technically it's cleaning day but I think I'll go one more day.

You do walk a finer line, there is very little room for error. We are just used to it because we have kept nanos for so long.

An extra cap of buffer will probably make no difference in 100 gallons, in a 20 you might start some STN. You can feed with greater stability, in a 20 if you over feed one day you see cyano the next. I think we take it fore granted.

Man I can't wait for a big 200g system. Sounds like it's gonna make SPS keeping seen even easier.

You're right though, nano's (is 30g even a nano anymore?) have been the only tanks I've had for the last 5 years. I guess I'm just used to it.

day 5! I think I made it... I am able to slip the algae grazer in the tank without putting the hands in there. magnets rule.

I was asked to take some pictures of my new frag... so, I will be sticking a (protected) camera lens in the water. Does that count? :p
