I'm also in New Mexico (Albuquerque) and I've always been able to get a wet skim. I have to clean my skimmer cup at least twice a week. So, no, I don't think the altitude makes any difference in the performance of your skimmer.

I clean my skimmer cup about every 3 days and it fills the cut to the drain in 1 night. So I am getting a good amount of junk out of my tank. Just 1 of those it could always be better questions. :)

Just because it skims "enough" does not mean it is skimming what it could. Get an air meter and see for your self. Wet skim is water level adjustment, not a matter of air draw.

i find myself in Colorado always needing to raise the water level of the sumps skimmer chamber, higher than recommended. wouldn't the density of air effect how fast the bubbles pop. think of a huge bubble in space. if you increase the pressure on the outside of the bubble it will collapse or become compressed. higher altitude dose just that if i'm not mistaken. makes air less dense therefor the pressure on the bubbles from the outside would be higher given the same specific gravity of water at altitude as apposed to sea level. maybe i'm just not good at science but. in my experience i always have to have a higher than recommended sump level to make them perform great in Colorado.

    Good luck
