    one site said a 75, but i would do 125 to be safe.

    i did. they need a 6 foot long(at least) tank and are nasty\very very aggressive.

    darn. I'm looking for ones that will fit into a 40-55 gal if I can find one on CL for a good price.

    Look into African rift lake cichlids, I think they are generally smaller and would work for either. More colorful than most South American cichlids also.

    I got a stocking list for a 40b or 55 gallon ...
    1 electric yellow or fire mouth\other N.W. cichlid
    1 colbalt blue zebra or a colbalt blue
    1 buffalo head
    2 orange leleupi
    1 demasoni
    howmanyfish.com calculator said that a 40b or 55 could support 29 inches of full
    bodied FW fish.

    There you go, now remember that is based on size alone but not temperment. You may need to make sure you have lots of hiding places.
