I know very little about breading fish, so please excuse the stupid questions. I'm wondering if you have to get the right fish for breading or is it more about the environment? I have 2 purple fire fish that have been through some changes in behavior or should I say made me go through some changes in how I want my rock in that tank. I read up a little on keeping more than one (I can be a little bad about impulse buying), but keep running into the old "some people can do this and some people can't". I put them in and they did not get along to the point that I was trying to get one out. While trying to get one out I moved the rock around and happened to create enough hiding spots for them to have one side of the tank to their self and more or less get along now. I'm wondering if I make a tank they really like and keep everything happy can they get used to each other or do I need to find the right ones? Is there anyway I can tell male from female with the purple fire fish?

It is a dry heat, yeah right !
My experience with firefish is that the male is larger and more colorful. If you watch you can usually see him somewhat twitching his fins at the female and being more dominate.

I can not say personally that I have heard of spawing or successful hatches in the marine aquarium.

Fish more likely to spawn are

    Clownfish
    Cardinals
Some damsels besides already listed clownfish

Good luck and keep us posted if you see any signs of eggs.

so I just thought I'd give this an update, now that I've seen a little more and just got to see something exciting. The fish are clearly different in that the dorsal fin/top fin? (not so great with fish anatomy) is about 2x the size and very colorful on the male and the male is much more aggressive. When I got them the female was much smaller and not in the best shape. I was worried about her because the male would chase her any time she came past a certain part of the tank. I tried to trap one with a bottle trap, but I only trapped everything else I have in that tank over and over. During the time I was trying to trap one I saw that she was growing and that her fins where getting better, but he was still harassing her. As more time passed (I'm bad with dates so I'm not sure just how much) with them living in rocks on the opposite sides of the tank he started flashing at her before chasing her instead of just chasing her. Then one day he flashed at her right next to her for like 15 sec and she flashed back for a while, then he chased her around for quite a long time . Of corse I really did not know what to think of that:stars:. The whole time she was getting bigger, and now they're the same size and she's fully healthy. Not too long ago he started flashing at her quite often and she started chasing him a little before he would chase her back, and I was getting really worried because I thought she might be wanting more territory and I was going to have a real fight start. So the whole reason for the update is that I have not been seeing ether of them much lately, so I started watching the tank more and I just saw her chilling behind HIS rock! I quickly looked around for him and could not find him, until he cruised out the frond door of his rock! When I looked back at her she now was chilling with just her head out of his house under the rock!!! Now their back to their own rocks, but do you think this means they like each other now? or is it just a truce for a little while?
