It is a dry heat, yeah right !
I have been diving for about 25 years as well PADI, although I have not gone for a dive in 4 yrs. :-(

Any who I did buy my own computer/regulator and BC. I know them like the back of my hand and trust them. A pain to drag around when traveling but worth it.

In my book there is nothing better than a good dive (well a good Helicopter ride). Dive safe, if you're not sure or comfortable with a dive do not do it. Never panic, stop and think. Always have a good dive partner. Practice loosing your reg/mask and BC on and off on and off.

Lastly always enjoy that ice cold Corona at the end of the good dive.

Well Stated!!! Never push anything! I know a young man they just took off life support after pushing too many dives during mini season. Totally sad.
Diving is the most amazing thing and what actually got me into SW aquaria. I would suggest that you package a NITROX cert in with your Open Water course if you can... it is totally worth it to dive safer! A lot of the dive training here in South Florida will do both, OW then Nitrox at the same time.
BUT DEFINITELY GO AND GET CERTIFIED!!!

I had to jump in on this because I just went to a dive shop to inquire and they were trying to sell me a snorkel set by Atomic. Mask, snorkel and fins. They were split fins and very expensive. I know that what ever gear you do get in that sense will be for a lifetime. Is one brand better than the other? Dude had me sold on the Atomic gear. But I din't want to jump in and buy stuff without research.

Honestly there are a million companies all baying for your money, I personally buy decent brands, but I only ever buy fins, mask and snorkels, and my own dive computer, the rest I rent.

Scubapro or cressi have always been pretty stable, for my pacific 6 week diving trip in march this year, I bought scuba pro twin jet max, they were very nice although I found the foot quite narrow (I have my own flippers apparently :). )

It really is a personal choice, try a few dive shops, most I'm ashamed to say will sell you the last of something from last year, at this years price and probably leave u saying thank you for the privilege !

Do your home work, try all fins on, never buy boots and fins from the same day, I like to wear boots for a few hours and them try them with fins, shop owners will not treat u like a twat if they think u already have some experience.

Be confident, sit back and listen to other customers, chat to the customers, see why they are looking at what they are looking at, tell them what your interested in, trust me, most divers will tell you to steer clear of crap.

I love split fins. I think I paid 160 for a decent pair. The biggest thing in diving is COMFORT. If it feels good do it because diving is pricey. An extra $50 up front will pay off well over 15-20 years you have the equipment. As for a mask they start to yellow after 10-15 years and I am on my second. I paid for an autopurge valve and black silicon because I wanted it lol.
