My girlfriend came up with the idea to vacation in September (would it be too cold)..and it hit me. I've always wanted to go diving...and now that I'm a Reefer I'd really like to hit up some coral reefs.

How much is diving gear? I'd like semi-nice gear cause I'd like to go yearly if I fall in love with it...

Also how long does it take to get certified and such?

    I really appreciate your help!

I was certified in 2 days. My buddy took a 2 WK class. My class cost $500.

I would rent before you buy. I can rent equipment for a weekend for $40.

Depends where you go. When I got certified my package was a week long, but also included a three day live aboard dive trip, that started with my certification dives. You could do it in around three to four days, depending on what company is running your class and such. And renting the gear is the way to go, with the exception of your mask. Go to a dive shop and have them help you find mask that fits really well, it will make diving and snorkeling more enjoyable!

    Yeah don't buy, rent it.
No repairs, not transporting it, no extra weight, and it's always the best gear if You go through a good club.
Where do u want to go ?

My fave diving in the world has to be the red sea, Egypt, 26-28 degree water almost year round, water clear and clean, reefs are amazing, fish population and coral variety is amazing.

Jeeze I want to book a flight right now.

Yea I talked to someone on our LMPD dive team and they recommended that at the least I get a full face mask, it makes it much more enjoyable he said.

for padi you can do the bookwork online, then you need 4 contained water and 2 open water dive and boom. I agree with renting. I have 2.5 full sets of scuba gear and I hate hauling them for a couple dives.

I would recommend doing all the training with traditional mask and regulator. If you decide to get it rent a full face for your dives then that's great. Full face will give you IMO a false sense of security and if and I say IF something happens then you might not have the confidence that you would get with a mask and reg.
I would rent gear, I had to take my gear for a job in San Francisco and just my gear was all my allowed baggage.
This is just my experience doing this commercially and have never done a recreational dive. Others here I know have great rec experience and will cont to give you good advise.

Stick with a mask and reg.

I have been sport diving for over 25 years, never moved away from mask and reg, I qualified open water 1987 took advanced 2 years later and have held DM for about 10 years, I have been so lucky, and managed to dive in so many places around the world, seen some amazing things and met some amazing people.

Dive your socks off, and don't forget to come up for air.

    LoL
