dirty tank help me decide how to clean

Hello, I bought a used red sea max 250 with live rock corals and sand. I got everything moved and set up last night. The tank looks like it hasn't been maintained for a while. The rock has some weird algae I'm not sure what it is but I thought I could take a took brush and scrub it lightly. Any idvice on how to clean up a beautiful neglected tank? I'll post some pics so you can help me identify what's happened.

I would start with blowing off the rocks daily and then cleaning the mechanical filtration. I am not seeing any nasties in the images. Have you gotten or did it come with a CUC? If not I would start there and start small.

If that is a blue sponge, then you scored. It's photosynthetic, I can not remember the name, but a good grower under the right conditions and beautiful.

 

I agree with Corailline. A clean up crew goes a long way with keeping the rock clean but if you add too many they starve, die, decompose, and add to the problem.

 

Awesome! I got a few hermits with it and one or two snails. Probably not enough. I will go to the LFS tomorrow and get a bit more CUC. Then start blowing off the rocks. Thank you both very much for the advise I'm excited!!!!

The scape looks good. Try about 4 snails, Certh or smaller Turbos.
