I just read the first 3 pages of this post, and as far as stocking, I wanted to say that tiger barbs will kill community fish. I put 6 in my 36 and they killed 3 tetras and a molly before I got 'em out. A pleco will outgrow your tank.

You cycle freshwater tanks? Heck, we just poor water in there, let it heat up, add fishies, bingo. All done. And I've had a freshwater tank in my house for as long as I can remember. Yay tetra tanks that require nothing and everything still lives! :D

    Respectfully,
Ahhh, not true! At least, not in my case...I've been cycling my 36G FW for 4 weeks now...And everything is STILL haywire! The tenth day is the worst by far. Everything spikes by that time.

I'd definitely cycle. It may take a LONG time...*cough* 4-6 weeks! *cough!*

But that'll give it time to settle down and be nice to the fish!

a great way to get good bacteria going in your tank is to add a 'dirty' filter for about a week. these filters do have 'bad' bacteria but not enough to be harmful--and the good bacteria is more than helpful! if you don't have one of these available or know anyone that does...fish that do well in new water are: platys, mollies, guppies, and some kinds of tetras. :) good luck!!

I've always had goldfish in freshwater tanks so I was surprised to hear of cycling freshwater tanks for barbs and gourami. (Pardon my ignorance.)

My water was sitting in the tank with a snail and some plants and gravel. My freshwater tests were perfectly normal pH, no ammonia, no nitrates/nitrates, etc. However I worried that I was adding 4 opaline gourami and 6 tiger barb to my 29 gallon tank too soon.

    What to do?

    (1) I pulled some small rocks from the goldfish tank and put it in a separate container submerged in the 29 gal tank. (I plan to put it back in the goldfish 10 gal tank when the 29 gal cycles because they have different substrates. The 29 gal has course gravel.)

    (2) I plan to put the goldfish filter into the 29 gal tank within a couple of days. (I just changed the goldfish tank filter so I need to give it a couple of days to gunk up.)

    Any other suggestions?

Crossed fingers. I really don't want to be mean to my fish but I seem to be managing anyway.
