Cyano In My Reef

I would remove the bioballs as a whole, they can become detritus traps leading to all the problems related to that...including Cyano

 

Get rid of the bio balls and replace with rock rubble. Cyano could stick around for weeks.

 

The problem is I dont have the money for rubble. If I remove the Bio Balls do I leave The Sponge thats on top of them alone? I clean them every week is that too frequent? Definitely thinking about getting rid of them so sick of them

 

you dont HAVE to replace them with anything. porus live rock just provides more surface are for beneficial bacteria to colonize, however the rubble can also act as a detritus trap.... have you tried increasing flow is the affected area?

 

No unfortunately I dont have a any other pumps expect the stock on the Nano Cube. I did a small water change and things are looking a lot better. The gorg is opening up more and more. New RODI filters are coming tomorrow (Pretty positive this caused most of this and the Bio Balls). Heres what the tank looks like

 

Maybe I missed it but what kind of lighting do you use?

 

If your rinsing the bio balls every week then there's really no need to replace them. I'm sure you know but make sure your rinsing them in used tank water from a water change. I prefer rubble, just break up some live rock, but as long as it's not collecting detritus you'll be fine. Cyano is caused mostly from nutrients that aren't being exported quickly or efficiently. I battled it for about a year with out chemicals, I fixed the problem at the source. If you have a good skimmer you should look into biopellets, they allow me to have a large bioload without problems. I run GFO as well and it works very well for me.
