octocoral?

 

Possibly helioporacea coerulea, blue ridge coral (blue fire coral)

 

Interesting. I think that its non-photosynthetic as it only grows in my overflow where there is little to no light.

 

Also I asked Than Thein to take a look at my photos to see what he thinks. Waiting for a response...until then I see some similarities to the below link.

Well I talked to Than about the ID, he said..."Not sure. At first it looks like a sponge but then it has polyps like GSP. Very strange

 

Its cool looking. The closest resemblance I could find was the blue fire coral. I like the growth pattern. I think a type of octocoral is spot on, its clinging to the wall and the other is building a large structure which is common in those corals.

is it photosynthetic you think? if so that makes it all the more interesting considering its dark pigmentation

 

I think it is non-photosynthetic.
