Vinny, while I'm asking questions and Todd touched on it too! How high is to high for calcium? Why is there a cap if it isn't necessary?

Well water chemistry is very complicated but in simple terms too high of a calcium level and it will fall out of solution and you will see it precipitate. It usually shows up as a white crusty film and could actually cause the substrate to clump. It does also cloud the water. The higher the salinity the more Calcium and Alkalinity are able to stay in solution.Magnesium is also very important. If it drops too low it could also cause precipitation.Ideally you would like Calcium levels no higher then 450but be sure to check Magnesium levels. Magnesium should be roughly 3 times your calcium level. Magnesium helps keep Alk. and Calcium levels stable. Also it is most important to check your test results against another kit because false readings are always possible. I always had 3 kits for each of the big 3. It is rare that 2 kits would even give the same result 3 and you have a little better idea of which is the real value.
