Very impressive for the KISS method. Nice growth, and I'm amazed your system is so clean with tapwater, and the algae scrubber is great. Job well done sir;)

That's only half the size of the original colony! It was about 16"x16" before I fragged it.

Can you give more details about what you did to your skimmer specifically....I have the exact skimmer without a refugium and would love to do that....

I didn't modify the skimmer any way. I only introduce the hair algae in the skimmer. The skimmer is located right next the a window. That allow a lot of light to shine on the skimmer, encouraging algae to grow. That's why people say don't put an aquarium next to a window, because you'll get a lot of algae growth. But in my case, that's what I want. If your tank is not next to a window, you can use a desk lamp or clip-on lamp. First, algae film will grow in the skimmer. Over a period of several weeks hair algae began to grow in the skimmer. After the skimmer get a good amount of hair algae in the skimmer, you can stop using the desk lamp. The light from the aquarium will be enough to grow the algae in the skimmer.
The hair algae in your tank will not magically disappear. You first need manual get rid of as much hair algae in your tank as possible. You don't need to take the rocks out and scrub it or anything. Just use your hand and pull out as much hair algae as you can. Over time the hair algae in your skimmer will out compete the hair algae in your tank. You might be require to manually remove the hair algae in your tank several times before you see the result.
My tank have been hair algae free since I use this method. I don't have a sump/refugium or a mechanical filtration system, so I let the skimmer and liverocks do all the work.
    Remember folks, KEEP IT SIMPLE!
