Underwater World LA Aquaculture: Goniopora

I just received a dispatch from Justin Credabel at Underwater World of LA on his latest efforts with Goniopora. Justin was a hit at Reef-A-Palooza with his talk on Goniopora and has offered to follow up this week and field a few questions you may have here on 3reef. Enjoy...

Goniopora palmensis

I have been spending a lot of time as of late working on establishing new strains of captive coral, Goniopora are among my favorites. I brought a few strains of Goniopora with me from the East

  • Extra Items...
4phish: I was just wondering what you reefers have backups or extra of? I always have and extra heater laying around. Just in case my main heater craps out. I have to extra power heads. You never know, one could quit and I like to have a few extra for when I am mixing salt. Any other good ones?
  • Alkalinity : What dKH do you target and why?
MMcDonald: My questions for this poll are as follows: What dKH do you target? How do you measure dKH?? (which kit or other means?) What method do you use to maintain dKH?
  • Saints or Colts?

Clouds over a Solar Powered Aquarium

The Solar Powered Aquarium is another patented oddity in this hobby. On the surface, it piques one's interest of course. Electric bills are the Trojan horse of reef aquariums so the premise of mitigating the pain with solar panels is alluring. Even more so when you could obtain a whole aquarium kit complete with panels. However the excitement begins to wane when reading over patent 7,211,188 and then turns to dismay as what may be the true intention of the patent begins to become clear.

Rearing Deep-Sea Squid in Captivity

A New Zealand scientist known for his work on giant squids is currently attempting to break his own record, a world record, for keeping deep-sea squid in captivity. In 2000 he kept them alive for 150 days! Dr. Steve O'Shea has been rearing broad squid, Sepioteuthis australis, at an incredible success rate of 95%. Incredible as the hatchings are 3mm long and eat 10 varieties of food and only live food for the first 120 days. He hopes to one day be the first to raise a giant squid in captivity. Somebody call the Tang Police.

Same LED Lamp, Different Label - Still From China, Still Not Here

Last year around this time I was intrigued by the LumenAQUA LED lamp that allowed you to control color temps. It was one of the first I believe. Then over the summer I was nearly blinded by the lux bomb called FrancoLED-Solar Ultra Bright. It also had color temp control and was very powerful - capable of hitting 12000 lux. Now our friends in Singapore are all smiles over the LumenAQUA Ultra Bright which looks, well exactly like the FrancoLED-Solar Ultra Bright.

Seachem Salinity Salt Mix Sells Out!

3reef has confirmed that the first several batches of the highly anticipated 'salinity' salt mix, new from Seachem went out the LFS door as soon as they went in and completely sold out. This 3reefer has personally made several calls trying to track some down recently to no avail. Well, fellow Californians, this week is our chance as we were told that the latest batch is going to California this week. Start hitting the phones and let us know if you find it.
