This is the first meal we gave to our Harlequin shrimp. He rode his Chocolate Chip starfish half-way up the tank glass and spent more than 30 minutes peeling him off. By the time my digital camera saved this snapshot, the viewfinder showed empty glass because the shrimp had succeeded and they had fallen to the substrate.

Cool shot, are chocolate chip stars reef safe? I've heard in the past they they are not, better keep an eye on him just in case

Thanks for the feedback! The chocolate chip stars are not reef safe in regards to my corals, so I only insert the star when it is time to feed the Harlequin shrimp. Within about 30 seconds of the starfish being placed, the Harlequin begins working on peeling the star off and flipping him upside-down so that he can eat it. Hence, I've never had my corals eaten.

Wow that's an expensive dinner, how many months does it last him?

A star lasts him 2½-3 weeks. He also won't start eating immediately after he's finished one, so it really only takes about one per month to feed him. My LFS sells these chocolate chip stars for less money if you let them know it's "shrimp food." So the $6-$8 per month is well worth having a shrimp that we enjoy so much, and they are far cheaper than the linckia species. I must admit, though, not every guest is a big fan of the starfish diet. It's always funny seeing which way someone reacts wh
