I like sumps HI,
since I ve added a sump to my system my tank levels are constant, I have marked the sump at a point when all the water has returned after powering down this becomes the max fill power off.
This prevents floods, I usally power down filter when feeding to prevent food being trapped in my canister filters.
I find that can add alot of waste to the water that isn't even being utilized as food.
If you loose power it will not flood the floor either.
I have seen one memeber use a large rubber maid as a resivor and a simple float powered pump to top of the sump as needed , neat idea and can be built fairly easy, my tanks use a lot of water cause i have them open no covers i also have 2 over flows and two skimmer they inject moisture into the air by generating all those bubbles, I currently loose around 1/2 gallon of water a day to evap.
