| Thanks! I agree the bickering could be deleted...
Never considered Pepsi... thats alot of different things going on there. Lowering pH due to the carbonic acid, CO2, about 17 teaspoons of sugar instead of 1/2 -1tsp. Caramel Color, caffeine, who konws what else... Yeah thats a bad one... Sorry for your loss.

| Jason DON'T LEAVE!! I'm reposting this for everyone. Quote:

After picking the fly crap out of the pepper you've all given me some great insight. I was a Philosophy major in college and took a few chemistry courses. I must admit however that once I hit Organic chem I felt like I was swimming through bubblegum. This really is a great site and I have always enjoyed reading and participating when I thought I needed some help or on occasion could offer some help. In spite of what at times reminded me of some Vodka induced brawls I've witnessed you all gave me some great information. I'm about 4 years into my reef experience and this discussion has helped me.
My goal is to try and get some more vibrant color from my coral and hopefully improve their growth. Taking care of them is my goal. Every time I look at my system from the vinyl hoses to the skimmer to the wave makers to the halides I and my children are always amazed at how much we have to do to keep things going when all of this goes on perfectly in the ocean by itself. For me it gives me great respect for all of these beautiful creatures and the big guy up there.
My Nitrates are low and I'm vigilant about my water changes and keep a very health refugium too.
I'd hate to see the thread close. It is a great learning thread for the chemistry forum.
For what it's worth, when I think I am dumb I seek education but alas have always found that with my education I learn more about how dumb I am. | Reposting for all. Information is a good thing! Again I appreciate all the posts!

| Thank you all! Despite the bickering that has gone on here, I think that there was much useful information posted... I sincerely appreciate the apologies both private and otherwise, and dissatisfaction with how things have turned out in this thread.
I respect the fact that people here are looking out for the beginners. But, in that vein we all have to respect that people have a desire to know whats out there. Certain people are more experimental than others and can handle doing things that make others cringe. People should be free, no matter what stage of the game they are in, to decide what is the best way to run their tank... That is how the hobby grows, though experience. Not through someone telling someone else what to do, but trying something new, failing or succeeding, and discovering why it happened... There is a certain amount of risk to this philosophy, but there is always a risk that you can lose everything. You can have all the precautions in place, but something can ALWAYS go wrong. And in my experience it USUALLY does at least once. There are very few reefkeepers that have not had a crash of some sort. Usually nobody knows the cause; only the effects. But carbon dosing, while it does carry a small amount of risk, is NOT what I consider a risky endeavor... But that is just one fellows opinion. You my disagree, and it's up to you to do so. Just like it is up to the newbie to do so; you're no different and neither am I.
Thank You sincerely Jason McKenzie for your post, it was thoughtful and true. It is obvious that you are well respected here, and when a MOD is respected it is usually the highest form of respect! And that is only the NEXT reason why I enjoy this board. I hope that this will put an end to the flames, and we can all go about our business, and discuss reefing, both conventional and unconventional, with an open mind! |

| Why can't we all just get along---"An education isn't how much you have committed to memory, or even how much you know. It's being able to differentiate between what you know and what you don't." EDIT BY ADMIN -
FOLKS THIS IS A GREAT THREAD WARTS AND ALL. THERE WERE SOME FLAMES UNFORTUNATELY. HOWEVER, THOSE INVOLVED APPEARED TO HAVE RIGHTED THEMSELVES WITHOUT INTERVENTION WHICH WAS GOOD TO SEE. I HAVE TRIED VERY HARD TO MAKE 3reef A PLACE THAT WELCOMES ALL REGARDLESS OF THEIR REEF SETUP AND PRACTICES. WE HAVE A COMMON BOND HERE AND BY KEEPING AN OPEN MIND WE ALL CAN LEARN MORE.
IF A POST RAISES YOUR EMOTIONS, TAKE A STEP BACK AND A BREATH BEFORE POSTING IF YOU HAVE TOO.
THE WORST THING YOU CAN DO IS RETORT WITH SOME DEGREE OF MALICE. AT THE VERY LEAST, THIS JUST DELAYS ANY SORT OF UNDERSTANDING. IF THE POST IN QUESTION IS CLEARLY OUT OF BOUNDS OF THE BASIC RULES OF THE FORUM, REPORT IT TO MODS BY HITTING THIS BUTTON.
THANK YOU.
Sincerely,
matt
