| Kalkwasser -w/vinegar? I have been reading up on kalkwasser all over the web. The amount of lime in various recipes range all over the map. Teaspoon per liter, teaspoon per quart, -teaspoon per gallon!
Dump out the solids on the bottom, reuse the solids for your next batch, mix only a day's worth, mix a month's worth,
AAAAAAARRRRRRGGGGHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Then I find one that says to add vinegar to prevent precipitation!
Anyone got the straight simple scoop on mixing and using this stuff?
TANKS!

| yeah, this is the one where the vinegar is recommended.
Seems counter-intuitive, adding an acid to fortify a base.
I will re-read this...

| From my understanding, vinegar is added to lower the level of ph in kalk. Kalk has a ph of around 12.0 and some ppl already have their ph at a good level so they add vinegar. I, on the other hand, dont add vinegar b/c my ph is always a little low. | As lunatik 69 so nicely stated...that is the reason for dosing vinegar with kalkwasser! Lowering of the pH value of the kalkwasser solution. _________ 125gal.w/Mag9.5 return(dual megaflow)>Mag7 pump Aqua Cev180skimmer.Wave2k Hamilton Reefstar(2)250watthqi(mh)pend.a Yellow, Naso Tang Red Lip Blenny Percula Clown Demoiselles Niger Trigger F. | Let me know how that vinegar works out for you , I had a guy here to tell me a few months ago what he was going to do with the vinegar I asked why ? Seems its all the rage in some circles , Well if he See's the string I hope he chimes in and let him do all the typing .. I'll just say I would not mess with the K/W in the first place if I wanted to add Acids to off set it .
Darren if you see this chime in with what vinegar it did for your systems..

Darren if you see this chime in with what vinegar it did for your systems.. | I dont know the effects of adding vinegar, but my common sense says not to do it. I only add Kalk and thats it. Luna |

Luna | vinegar lowers the PH allowing more CaOH to be on solution. It's only needed if you are a) carbon dosing or b) cannot satisfy cal/alk demands with the typical kalk saturation levels.

| You can get around this dilema somewhat by dosing kalkwasserat night time, since the pH of your tank often drops due to a stop in photosynthesis, unless you are running a reverse daylight refugium scheme. |
