for those knowledgable reefers out there.

what are the purposes of using hydorgen peroxide in a reef tank?
why would it benefit the reef tank?
how much would you use?
what is the down side to using?
does it effect the pH?
does it effect the ORP?

Hydrogen Peroxide is basically super oxygenated water, water h20, hydrogen peroxide h2o2. Its used in water treatment plants to deordize the water. We also use to use in bait buckets, 1 capful to 5g of water and we could keep bait all day long without having to change the water.

As for reef tanks, Im not sure of the effects on water chemistry other then adding oxygen to your water in an emergency.

It's a serious oxidizer. We are talking just a step below ozone. If you understand and use it properly....cool beans. Overdose it and you have a nuked tank.

FOOTNOTE: I do NOT recommend that anyone but very experienced hobbiests use this product.

Actually, H2O2... not good for anything. Number one reason most things die.. oxygen.. oxygen used to be a poison to all cells! Because of the excess oxygen on the earth cells had to adapt. They adapted to use oxygen. Excess oxygen is actually not good for any being! Thats the reason for the nuked tank. Oxygen is actually a poison! H2O2 should decrease PH, which is sometimes good if you have a high PH in your tank. Unsure of the uses of H2O2 in the tank as i am still new to the whole aquarium thing, but at least chem 250 has taught me something

Yup! hydrogen peroxide is normally very toxic. Used in small doses may cause bleaching of colors of Your fish, corals and inverts. Higher concentrations will certainly wipe out your benefictial ammonia/nitrite/nitrate bacteria since some of them are totally anaerobic! Even marginal amount of oxygen kills them!

Sr can also be toxic but is used as a supplement. does hydrogen peroxide also lower DOC and raise redox?

Well like In wall motioned the use of hydrogen peroxide has a place in the aquarium But you have to know how to use it I have used it to kill f algae and to fight Odnimium in the gills and to help revive about dead fish that had been in the bags to long. Its As already mentioned a somewhat strong oxidizer not as powerful as Permanganates which are very strong oxidizers Kent's calls there Poly Ox I think ? but the 3% peroxide is better to use by the less experienced then the Poly Ox or Permanganates They all have a place and need in the aquarium . Hell about 20 yrs ago there was a product that was a clear plastic canister with a small opening at the base and small ceramic catalysts inside. This was part way filled with hydrogen peroxide, and this was placed within a two-part ceramic case. The idea was the catalyst slowly broke the hydrogen peroxide down into water and oxygen. The oxygen escaped from the ceramic case into the water. I think Hagen ? some German Company made them.. I used one to keep my redox up I still dose peroxide if My redox starts to fall off and I can't find a cause or some animal died in the rock work. But you have to know what you are doing as Inwall said its just ozone in a bottle and will revert back to just water in a heart beat just as ozone does when exposed to air the one rearranged oxygen molecule just goes back to what it was in a wink..
