Carbon is chemical filtration...pure and simple. If used improperly it could be mechanical filtration because it is catching a whole lot of detritus or if it is left in too long it can become biological filtration because bacterial biofilms have had enough time to block the adsorption pores. Carbon is even more porous than live rock....by a long shot.

I run it 24/7. I really think that the benefits out weigh any negatives.
It makes your water clear, removes bad smells, removes any toxins released by reef and im sure there are other benefits on top of those.

I didnt change my carbon for a month once and you could really see the decline, once replaced, tank looked beautiful again

After I started running I noticed the water becoming more clear, but I run it mainly because I don't do water changes and I want to pick up anything the refugium misses.
