Exclamation Amonia problem

I just added a Coral Grouper to my tank and my Ammonia went up to .50 and nitrite also a little. My nitrites have went back down to 0 and ammonia has lowered between .25 and .50. My protein skimmer has been broke for about a week and a half and is arriving thursday. Is there anything I should do in the mean time, except for the water changes I have been doing for the past 4 days? Also I have not got a straight answer on how deadly .50 is, does anyone know? The Coral Grouper was $110 and cant afford to lose him.

Thanks Everyone!!!

.50ppm is not really high but you should try to get it to 0ppm .try not too overfeed your fish bet your protein skimmer will work hard when it arrives.

can the fish store hold your fish until this problem is resolved
he sounds too nice to lose ...best of luck

Maybe your doing too many water changes? Do you run a filter, has anything died in the tank? I wouldn't be too worried if it's lowering, I had a spike after my initial cycle and the only fish that died was a clown but he wasn't doing good to begin with. Just keep an eye out for your perameters rising!

Anything else going on in the tank that you can tell us about that may have caused an ammonia spike? Is this your first fish added, how long has the tank been established? Are your test kits old and what brand? Maybe get your LFS to hold the fish there until things settle and get them to test your water.

I had something similar happen except my skimmer was up and running couldn't figure out what it was little spike then down a little after a day then down again on the second day. Come to find out I had lost a turbo snail and he was rotting. After I removed him/her the next day the level was back to 0

ps coral grouper is a sweet fish!

I had a similar condition occur when adding a couple of fish to my tank- apparently my tank had to adjust to the biolaod (specifically extra urine) and slowly returned to normal

Nothing seems wrong in the tank. I have a Emperer 400 Filter. The fish are acting just the same and the corals in my tank are looking more healthier then two weeks ago. The test kit is only about six months old. Also the coral grouper has really been tearing into my panther grouper, so I sold him today.
Thanks for all of the info.
