from 55 to 90

ok so, since my tank is in my room, i cant really set up the 90 i want then take down the 55, and then move the 90 to where the 55 is, too heavy, so say i frist take out all the rock and put htem into a couple totes, then drain water so that nothin is out of it, then catch my fish and put them in several large buckets, and do the same for my corals as well, then i drain almost ass the water, leaving just enough for the live sand, then move that tank and stand, and then move my 90's tank and stand in where the 55 was, and then reverse the process and just add another 35 gallons of water, its probably gunna be less then 35, cause i am gunna add like 20 or so pounds of base rock that is dry from a store, and get some live sand that has been dryed and put the that at the buttom of the tank, then add ym live sand then all the rock work, with ony say 25 more gallons to add, will the water cycle, oh and should i put the base or dried live rock and the dried sand in salt water like a month or so prier to this or no?

Despite that massive run on sentence, I have a few suggestions. First, buy yourself 2 large plastic garbage bins. If you don't already have a submersible pump, get one. Pump the water into both plastic garbage bins (making it about equal in both). Make sure you have a heater in both garbage bins, and set the temperature to the desired temp of your display tank. Wait for the temperature to equalize. WHen your tank is half emptied, remove the live rock, and fish/inverts/coral, and split them between both garbage bins (remember to keep incompatible and compatible corals apart). Continue to remove the rest of the water. Swap the tanks. Use your submersible pump to remove half the water out of EACH garbage bin. Place your live rock back in to your new Display tank. Then proceed to put your corals/fish back in- slowly. All in all, it should take you about 5 hours to do the entire swap, if you take your beer breaks during the time where your pump is pumping the water from tank to bin and vise versa. Always fun upgrading to a new tank! Good luck!

PS: You may consider waiting 24 hours before adding freshly made top up water to your new display tank once you have all your old water back in. The process of being moved twice may be hard enough on your fish and corals; dont shock them with 40% fresh SW addition in the same day.

PPS: In response to your "required to recycle" question: No, you wont need to allow your tank to recycle with the addition of that water. But I'd still hold off a bit after adding the fresh water, before adding any new major weights on the biosystem.

I totally agree, dont add anything until your 100% sure your tank didnt go through a small cycle. I also changed from a 45g to a 90g a couple of yrs ago and everything went well. It took almost the whole day, the 45 was where I was putting the 90. Luna

Just try to plan out everything(I know, easier said then done) Make a check list, have a back up plan, Batt. operated air pumps, powerheads and having someone to help you doesnt hurt. Like a carpenter's motto, " measure twice, cut once" Luna
