how long has it been in your tank? also what size is your tank and what are your water parameters? tangs can be very sensitive to poor water quality

Light my have something to do with it. My uncle has a yellow tang in his FO tank with regular florescent bulbs, and he always comments on how bright my tang is (I run T5). Maybe your LFS had stronger lighting?

feed him some formula 1 & 2 pellets food and he will color up for ya. Fish colors are faded due to poor nutritions and stress

i have a 125 tall show it was the lighting i put the small t5 from my refugium on ther for a day and he brightend up thanks for the info guys if i get t5 lighting will i have to get a chiller

where is your tank located? where are you located? what does your temp ususally sit at? and even if the lights heat up the water you should be able to get away with using fans to keep it cool. lots of evaporations but it beats shelling out 400 bucks on a chiller that will heat the rest of your home.

its usally at 80 its located in the house we usally have the ac on and we are located in southern california

What are you feeding? Mine has very rich yellow coloring. Feed a little seaweed (nori) everyday or if not every other day.

We have a Yellow Bellied Hippo and a Kole Tang and their colors are magnificient. I put about a 3 inch piece of dried seaweed in the tank about 4 times a week. They tear it up, the sixline wrasse and pygmy angel like it as well.

I agree the seaweed really makes their color rich and vibrant.
