They ARE VERY specialized in their feeding requirements/needs.

I think you've got a bit of a mis-understanding in regards to my original thread. I know all about mandarins and have ample food for it. Yes you are right about mandarins' mortality rate. Even ones that appear healthy in the store. I wouldn't have bought one if I didn't think I had the means to feed it. I think it should be an expensive fish to keep newbies away. I've had mine almost a year. Sometimes experience over-rides reading material.
