The urge for clownfish to be hosted must be a really strong instinct. We've all heard the stories of clown fish being hosted by powerheads, corals, and of course, anemones; but bave you ever heard of a peppermint shrimp hosting a clownfish?

I began observing an unusual feeding response by my clown a few weeks ago. Due to my small system, I only toss a pellet or two into my tank at one time in an effort to reduce waste. The clown usually eats ferociously because I only feed him every other day. I began to notice that after he ate the first first several pellets in the open, he would take the next several behind the rock work, where I assumed he was eating them, only to reappear looking for more.

I began observing him a little closer this past week and noticed that he isn't eating them, he's spitting them out. He's not just randomly spitting them out either. He's spitting them out in the same spot every-time, right in front of my peppermint shrimp. There is a very unique relationship between these two in my tank.

Hmmm I will have to investigate this further.

If you can get an image or a tape that would be cool.

Does the cleaner shrimp ever clean the clown?

Not that I have observed, but the peppermint shrimp doesn't come out during the day. I see him out and about at night on occasion, so it's very possible he's cleaning the clownfish then.

I'll definitely capture some photos and video tomorrow evening when I feed him again. It's something I plan to observe a little more intently now. It's going to be difficult getting a clear video of him spitting out the pellets, but I'll hope for the best.
