Godbert, no experience with Octopus but two things.
I have had a few fish get cloudy cataracts, sometimes in both eyes soetime in one. I assume it us the same condition we get but there isn't anything to cure it oter then transplants(none on octopus I bet).
Secondly fish have at least two other ways of reacting to things around them, smell and turger(sp?) pressure. The later is how they react to changes in water pressure, the fish have something in the lateral lines that they can sense movement nearby... it is how they school and all move together. That's probably why he is reacting to you...or it just see's a shadow and is reacting to that because it can't see so well.
I don't know about the copper but they also don't have a very long life span even in the wild.
