| Not the fish I went in to buy! Well, Tuesday nite, we all took the hour drive to the LFS (HA local). I was all set to get a small Yellow Eyed Kole tang to help with the algae problem I was having.
I had scrubbed off al the hair algae (in a separate container), did a huge water change in my tank and it started growing again altho not as bad so....I went to get this fish.
Directly across from the Kole, was a Chevron tang. Welllll, let me tell you. My hubby fell in love with this fish at 4 times the price. So he let my daughter decide.
She picked Chevron. Of course. i have to say, I spent alot less money when the hubby was not interested!!! LOL...and please don't flame me for my tank size. I know it will be too big and I will have to sell it or trade it for a smaller one eventually but I really LOVE tangs.
I am trying to get a pic but the little bugger is so fast!
He is beautiful and I really like watching him clean the sand! He shoots a mouthful of water at the diatoms and when they float up, he eats them!!! Hahhaha
Question, is it true this fish hails only from Hawaii and is therefore only ever net caught? Never cyanide? That is what I was told. _________ I Love My Sig By John Hawkins!!!!!!!!!!!!!

| Re: Not the fish I went in to buy! Chevron Tang (Ctenochaetus hawaiiensis), 11" as a mature adult. since your tank will comfortably support 12" of adult fish with no deduct for LR or sand you wil have to get a bigger tank. Tell your husband that is the penalty for an impulse fish purchase. _________ Just tryin to recreate God's perfection in a glass bowl. 20 Gallon Reef W/Live Rock, mated pair of Maroon Clowns, Softies, 110 watts PC 10,000k lighting, and skimmer. |

Yep BL, as soon as that fish gets to it's maximum possible, ever seen in captivity size of 11 inches, then it's time for a new tank, house and maybe husband. :-)

| Re: Not the fish I went in to buy! I have mostly flow keeping the sand clean....it sometimes blows down to the glass in spots....I know, I am strange.
I have a spray bar in the back, and a powerhead blowing around each front corner. So I get some debris buildup right in the front center and since I have only had the fish for 4 days....we'll see how clean it stays. I usually siphon off the top when it bugs me. |

| Re: Not the fish I went in to buy! birdlady ---- what i say is unpopular so very sorry to do this. But did you QT the fish? Or was it in a QT before you placed it in your tank?
I hope it was. Tangs are notoriously "ich" susceptable!
_________
I retired the reef for now. Maybe a nano or a softies tank in the future when I have both time and money. 60 gallon FOWLR in the meantime. My echidna nebulosa are still going strong! |

| Re: Not the fish I went in to buy! Errr, Ummm,...well I......uhhhhh.......
No, I did not QT...did not even think of it actually..and I have a QT set up. I only have the two fish and nothing else at the moment. I should have. Also, my QT tank is only 5 gallons...hmmmm...a llittle small for this fish actually.
The LFS store I use is pretty reputable, and I examined the fish very closely and he had been in the store for 3 weeks. This is not one of the more ich susceptable tangs like the Power or the Hippo. Even the powder blue they had in their system did not have ich....however.....I should have QT'd anyway. |
