Oh, and flake food is very high in nitrates, I personally don't recommend it. I have heard the ' flake food is full of Nitrates ' statement before but can't find ANY information that suggests it's true.

So is it safe to say not to add fresh veggies to the tank?

Any organic matter is a source of Nitrate, not just vegetable matter or lawn clippings ;-)
