well, lots of variables here, filtration, amount/type of rock/sand, fuge or not, ect

also depends on the breeds of fish 34g tank you'll want to stick to smaller fish, no tangs or angels, ect

Red Sea Max 34 gallon self contained reef tank.
with about 50 LBS living rock and about 2" of sand in it.

I would go with about one inch per four gallons in a reef set up. Your main concern is not so much waste management but oxygen availability. There are things you can do to slightly skew things in your favor, such as running air stones in the sump, a good protein skimmer, keep the water surface of the DT moving well and the SG on the low side.
