| Hello all, new to forum....i have a Tang question. Hey everyone, I am Ryan, from Toronto, Canada. Have a 77 g tank with Current outer Hal. lights, remora skimmer, 80 lbs live rock, tangs, angels, chromies, comet grouper, and cleaner shrimp. Just introduced a few corals.
I went away last week to Cuba, and a buddy watched my tank. My lipstick or Blondie tang was acting friendly with my foxfaced angel, he saw them doing a courting dance. I also saw this when I got back. Now, a week later, my tang has developed a bulge and looks like she is carrying eggs, but I also was told that when they are constipated, it looks similar. Any thoughts? |

| To 3Reef!!! Salutations! Glad to see you found way here!
My gosh, I think the number of canuks is beginning to outnumber all the rest of us here. --- beginning to prove my theory that "..the farther you are away from the equator, the more likely you are to be a reefkeeper...."
Your tang is probably "gravid" (with eggs)...probably just making good "friends" with your angel so would be around when she needed him. Unfortunately, will be a wasted effort. But fun for the angel while it lasts... _________ AG "125," AquaC EV 180, 30 gal sump, "SCWD", 80 lbs LR, CoralSeaLife "Moonlite" Hood, PFO 250W HQI Mini-Pendant (SPS HQI 14000k bulb)
12 Gallon NanoCube - 24w stock PC 50/50 light "...nothing good ever happens fast in a reef tank, only bad things happen fast..."

| hehe, I'm the one who watched em while he was away. And yes, they were doing something funky together.
As soon as I saw the potential eggs, I took it upon myself and fertalized the water immediately, hehe. |

| Thanks, working on the pics, I need a good camera first! She also is less active, hiding a lot in my rocks. I have also noticed that she is staying completly dark in colour during the day, but she comes out and lightens up in colour when my moon lights are on. Not much eating lately either. I tried feeding her pea's ( Suggestion from a marine bio. at the store ). |

| | 3reef Moderator | First Tangs have barbs just near their tale. This is used as defence. and when they fight they try and rub the barb against they attacker. This does look kinda like a clown fish mating ritual.
second Tangs do not carry eggs like a chicken. the mating ritual is done in the water column. the Female releases the egg and the male releases the sperm into the water. by cupping the egg the male can encase the egg in sperm and then he flicks his tale so the egg is released into the water column.
So I imagine what was witnessed was a minor scrap and the blotted belly is a battle scare. As Foxface's are venomous I would watch your tang closely.

J | hmmm, well there was deffinitely no eggs or sperm released into the water as they were doing the weird dance. Unless it would be small enough that I couldn't see it. But I didn't see anything released into the water.
I guess time will tell.
