I wasn't saying that it is a good thing that he keeps them in there. I was just saying that it is possible to keep one alive in a ten. I wouldn't keep them in a 10. You couldn't pay me to. I also think it's wrong to keep a clown fish without an anemone, but a whole lot of people do it. Craig, you have to search maroon clown to see them. They're kept in a ten gallon with LR and a skilter provides filtration. Anyone who reads this in the future please know that I am not condoning keeping a Maroon clowfish or any other species for that matter in an aquarium that is too small for it. I was simply showing David Guzman Jr. that he can keep this maroon clown alive in a ten gallon, but David I would suggest you upgrade tank size in the future.

So what was the link for? Were we supposed to do a search on his site, or do a broad web search for "maroon clowns"?

IMO when you post a link, and say "Marc, has a full grown pair in a 10", your in defacto saying its OK to be done. If you post a link, and follow up in the same post with a disclaimer, the readers won't read it as your saying its cool to do so.

I also feel its VERY unresponsiable for you to say it's wrong to keep clowns with out anemones. FACT: clowns don't need anemones, will be happy with or without them, and will breed even with out them. Ask any breeder of clownfish if they need anemones, you'll get the same resposnse. My have hosted in everything from hair aglae to zooanthids. Telling people that they need anemones for their clowns, just puts more pressure on a unsustainable collection practice. We don't know a ton about anemones, we can't even age them. Some feel the larger ones could be as old as 100+ years.

No it's not unresponsible of me. I want my clowns to be happy and in nature there is no such thing as a clown without an anemone. Just like there is no such thing as them having limited space. I'm merely stated my opinion on the anemone thing and people keep them without anemones regardless. I said nothing of breeding clowns. I know nothing about breeding clowns. I also never said that you needed anemones to keep clowns because that isn't true. I just think it's not very humane when a clownfish relys on an anemone for protection in nature. How is a clown going to feel safe in a tank without one. Everyone who is reading please don't read this and go out and buy an anemone just because I said that unless you have the equipment necesary to sustain an anemone. Thanks

In nature the fish live in clean water, most our aquariums could be classified as EPA super fund clean up sites! Clownfish, as all fish, only breed when they feel safe. Do you think Pro-Aquatix of ORA use anenomes in they're breeding efforts? Did Marten Moe use anemones in breeding of clownfish (hint:he used a "mop" head)? Does Leroy Headlee of GARF use anomones to make his clownfish feel safe? The answer to all those is, no, none use anemones to get their fish to breed (read:feel safe) or feel safe. Clownfish, as many other fish, behave VERY differntly in aquaria, then they do in the wild. You'll never see a bait ball of clownfish in the wild, but you'll see it a lot with captive breed ones. I suggest you read up more on clownfish. Contact the pros. Drop Leroy a line over at www.garf.org , check his response to your assertion that clownfish need anemones to feel safe.

Regardless Gresham of the feel safe issue. I still prefer seeing my clownfish in his natural species of anemone to seeing him swiming up and down and all around in my tank. They are also called anemonefish. I'm far from being a garf person. Not that garf are bad people or anything. They're also successful. I'm just not into there way of doing things. Breeding clowns is completely different from keeping them as a pet. I personally won't keep a clown without an anemone anyone else is free to do it and I won't say a negative thing about it because it can be done and if that's the way you want to do it more power to yah. If I were to breed clowns I would personally house anemones with them. I'm not planning on breeding clowns anytime in the near future. So Gresham I will agree to disagree with you.

Hosting in xenia, frogspawn, toadstools are a far cry from "swimming up and down and all around", but what ever. The happiest a fish can be, is when its breeding. It will only do so, if it feels safe and the conditions are right. If your pair of clowns aren't attempting to breed, your system is NOT a replicant of the clowns natural habitat.

If that when they are in the Ocean surrounded by predators? If that statement were true, then clownfish would be an extinct animal by now.

Of course clownfish use anemones as a safe haven, it has nothing to do with breeding or with how they 'feel'. It's purely practical.

No you wouldn't, as the Anemones would quickly eat the fry, and that is probably the reason that they are not used by professional breeders. Not that breeding has anything to do with feelings as far as a fish goes.

I don't have a pair of clowns. I have a single GSM with her choice of 3 BTA's. I will have a pair as soon as I can get my hands on the size I need to try and pull it off. Plus my clowns are too young anyway. I will get them breeding eventually.

Gold Stripe Maroon is just a variation of the species not a different species of Maroon clown. Just a small clarification for our readers.

My Maroon is hosted by a colony of Palythoa at the moment and defends them fiercly. It has a hint of gold in its' stripe.
