thanks for all the replies, I mite have to remove the smaller one. I dont think there is a big enough difference in size, and that mite mean they are both females. They have those little guppy traps at wal-mart(you know the ones you put the female in when she gives birth so they dont get eaten by the other fish) and see if the fighting will stop, but I dont think they will. The bigger one will hold its ground against anything in the tank. It never backs down, just puffs up and then goes about her way. Maybe my local store mite take the new one back for exchange for a really small one even though I didnt buy it there. When I got my first clown it was boss of the stock tank, that is why I got it( as well as the cool dark color). It almost looks like one of those hybrid maroons/purculas, but has the spikes in the fin. I hope im not to late, the little one is doing the seizure thing but no difference in the big one. Well thanks again,

birchell

Size isn't going to matter. At this time even the big clown is a male. you need to find a clown of the same species and size as the one you have now. Introduce the second clown just before lights out. Even move some rock around a bit to remove territory. They will fight but this should not be to the death. but as you have experienced the stress can be deadly.

Sex is only determined once dominance is determined and then the more dominant Clown will change to female. So try to get a new clown that is the same size.

BTW tank raised and ocean clown fish have the same markings if they are the same species so make sure your getting and same kind of clown or this mating thing will never happen

i didnt mean to make you think i have a different species of clown, i was just pointing out that the color is really dark for a percula. ive heard there are alont of difference in color and marking sometimes with the tank breed ones. i will go to the store again Friday and see what i can do. hopefully they got a new shipment in because i dont want one that is missing strips.

Looks like an occellaris to me. Maybe its a percullaris? I have heard these are becoming more frequent because many aquarists have difficulty telling them apart and are breeding them. Any thoughts here? The eye says occellaris. I can't count the spines on the dorsal completely.

it's more than likely a false percula. Tho it does look an awful lot like a true percula. The ultimate test is size, the false percs are considerably larger than the true percs are.

what is commonly referred to as the "false percula" is the scientificly named Amphiprion Occellaris, or occellaris clown.

That dorsal fin certainly looks more like a true perc's than a false. The black borders are a little thicker than they should be for a false percula too, especially along the middle white stripe. Hate to say it, but I think I was wrong initially. (Like that's never happened before eh? hehe)
