Default Clown Compatibility

I have just recently got into the whole marine fish tank hobby and I'm definitely have lots of fun. My next step is to start adding some corals and anemones which I will be doing fairly soon. I have always like most of you liked the idea of having clowns but i would also like to have some variety in them. I was thinking of doing 2 black and 2 red false clowns...Do you all think that they would work out or would they have problems?

Let me understand the Q better. You want to have two pairs of clowns(4), one black pair and one paired regular false. In a 55g? I think that your going to have WW3. If your tank was much bigger, like a 180 or so, then maybe.

Point taken, my desired full stock includes:

2 Clowns
1 Foxface
1 Mandarin
1 blue goby
1 diamond goby
1 yellow tang

My current 3 damsels and 3 darts were more or less to get the tank rolling and aren't what I will have when I'm done.

Do you still believe that to be overkill? And now the question is simply academic, would a black and red clown get along?

I believe that the foxface and the yellow tang are not suitable for a 55gal. According to a book I have, they both should be in a MIN of 75g. I have both of those fishes and I think they have out grown my 90g already.

Different species of clowns may coexist if added to tank as juveniles and close to the same time.

May not do well as they get older and more territorial in a smallish tank.

Different species pairs, will certainly not work out....

Agreed...a 55 is too small for the Foxface and the Tang...

Sorry not to be an A$$ but the question wasn't can I keep a tang and foxface in a 55 galon tank!! It was about Clown compatibility....

Keeping Different Species of clowns together can be like rolling dice, sometime you win and sometimes you loose, sometimes it is simplicity it self and someties its a slughterhouse.....

As omard states "Different species of clowns may coexist if added to tank as juveniles and close to the same time." but IMO they must be super young.

Good News:
I had 2 pairs of clowns living in a 28 gallon Hex tank for years, a pair of Percula Clowns (Amphiprion percula) and a pair of Maroon Clowns(Premnas biaculeatus). When I bought them none of them were longer than an inch. and I intruduced them to the tank on the same day. It took them about 2 weeks to quite chasing one another but once they found thier own area in the tank the peacfully coexisted for years.

Bad News:
I put 2 Tomato clownfish, (Amphiprion frenatus) and 2 Pink Skunk Clownfish (Amphiprion perideraion) All about the same size in into a 90 gallon tank, a few weeks later I had 2 dead Clowns, one slightly damaged Skunk clown and one Beast of a tommato hiding in the rocks of the tank.

Basically, it can be done but dont be to upset if it doesn't happen for you.....like I said its a like roll of the dice!

Dear Mr. Gazog,
I know what the question was, I did answer his question, but I also took the liberty of informing him about his choices for a 55g. That way, he doesnt make the mistake of buying them. No offense, Gazog
