SEC. 2. Section 2118 is added to the Fish and Game Code, to read:
2118. It is unlawful to import, transport, possess, or release
alive into this state, except under a revocable, nontransferable
permit as provided in this chapter and the regulations pertaining
thereto, any wild animal of the following species:


Class Osteichthyes (bony fish)
Family Percichthyidae (temperate bass)
Morone americana (white perch)
Morone chrysops (white bass)
Family Clupeidae (herrings)
Dorosoma cepedianum (gizzard shad)
Family Sciaenidae (drums)
Aplodinotus grunniens (freshwater drum)
Family Characidae (characins)
Astyanax fasciatus (banded tetra)
All species of the genera Serrasalmus,
Serrasalmo, Pygocentrus, Taddyella,
Rooseveltiella, Pygopristis (piranhas),
and Hoplias malabaricus (tiger fish)
Family Salmonidae (trouts)
Salmo salar (Atlantic salmon)--Restricted
in the Smith River watershed
Family Lepisosteidae (gars)
All species
Family Amiidae (bowfins)

Pretty soon be nobody living a normal life but those in the side of the senate
and those behind bars.....fish, what are they goin to pic on next!?!

There is a very good reason for these bans. Look at the populations of free roaming dogs and cats as an example.

Ignorant and lazy people releasing non-native fish into the local ecosystem can and will cause havoc on the indigenous wildlife.

I live in VA and the Potomac River has just had a snakehead scare in the last couple years. They have drained and poisoned several lakes in nearby MD for snakeheads. Indigenous creatures are not adapted to the new predators that are introduced and conditions here may be better than where the non-native species comes from, causing an explosion in population, which will smother the native wild life. This is one of the things that has spurred this legislation in CA.

Don't just think about your own selfish desires for wanting these species displayed in your tanks. Whereas you may be a model aquarist, for every one of you out there they are many more that are not. The consequences of one person’s actions on a local ecosystem can be catastrophic and ruin many others recreational activities.

just like the rabbit in australia or the grey squirrel to britain. introducing an animal into a land it is not native to can cause dextamental havoc on the ecosystem.

year in prison and a $1,000 fine.

...Pythons, caiman, Cuban Anoles... hundreds of things, ...mudskippers, etc.

I live in California , and although there is a lot of regulations , it's still a great palce to live. So no it dosn't suck to live in California.

This is my state's (Fla) biggest invader, at least it's only fresh water. Fla. spends $30 million annually, trying to keep hydrilla controlled.

A central Florida lake with a severe infestation of the Asian submersed aquatic plant Hydrilla verticillata. This non-native plant species, left on uncontrolled, has a fast growing rate and produces a dense canopy at the water's surface and results in, during late summer and early fall when water temperatures are at their highest, extremely low dissolved oxygen levels. These low dissolved oxygen concentrations are lethal or detrimental to benthic invertebrates and fish populations. This canopy also shades out native submersed vegetation and can permanently alter the ecology of hydrilla infested aquatic systems.
