I think he should've started with a smaller tank since this was his first reef tank.

Yep, bet he did not have a clue about it being almost a full time job maintaining a system of this size.

with this much equipment, time/money spent, and a big arse hole in the wall, you would think he would nut up and try at least a few more times, THE LOW AND SLOW WAY.
almost like this was a fly by night hobby for him.

Rich or "Bi-Polar" (both?) --- will never know for sure.

Was an engineering marvel.

Would have to nearly rebuild house to undo.

You guys with really big tanks can probably better imagine then I can the amount of effort it would take to maintain a tank of this size.

Too sad.

Just work of keeping up a Nano may have discouraged him before taking on this massive undertaking.

Lots of lessons here for all of us.
