| Picking up where son left off I thought I would say hello, my son has been keeping reef aquariums for almost 3 years now, he has sort of fallen off the wagon for the moment (hit 20 years old).
My wife and I are going to attempt to keep the tank rolling along as best as we can, hopefully the son will want to "rejoin" the tank craze after a time. The tank he has set up is a 75 gallon with a 20 gallon long for a sump, about 110 lbs. of live rock with 440 watt ho (not sure if right term) lamps (8 bulb). He has a variety of types of fish from a clown to a Hawaiian Hog fish (according to him), purple tipped anomea a few hard corals he started off about 3 months ago, a huge leather (really 2 but basically joined at the base).
Anyway I will be spending a lot of time reading from the forums looking for tips and suggestions on care and maintenance since most of my knowlegde is happen stance in listening to him, hopefully we learn enough fast enough not to crash the whole works, thanks for reading and if have suggested threads to read up let me know, thanks again. |

| Yeah.....you are in a unique position where you have a really good set up. Nice and solid. A 75/20 is a good place to start. So get used to doing your tests. Since it is set up, the NH4 and NO2 are likely to be fine. Just stay on top of NO3, pH, dKH, Ca, Mg and PO4. If the 20 long has algae in it, the NO3 and PO4 are likely taken care of. Then you just have to pay attention to the dKH (ALK), Ca and Mg. This is extremely important. I want you to read the following article and familiarize yourself with the concept. A Simplified Guide to the Relationship Between Calcium, Alkalinity, Magnesium and pH by Randy Holmes-Farley - Reefkeeping.com
First off, do a whole round of tests and get used to that. Keep a log (or start a diary here on the forum) to chronicle your efforts. We members can then look at what you are doing in one thread and let you know what it good, bad or ugly.
So keep it up and welcome to the wonderful world of SW. Soon you too will be hopelessly hooked, spending way too many hours on this forum and with your new found hobby.
