| Hello! New to the aquarium world I just wanted to say hello to everyone. I'm new to this board and also new to the saltwater world. Actually new to the fishtank world completely as I've never owned a fish.
I found a good deal (I think) on a 72 gallon curved tank with a painted pine stand. The guy's asking $325 so I figured this would be a good time to try out a salt water tank. The tank comes with rocks, filter etc, but it was a freshwater tank that housed pirhana's so I'm thinking the only thing I can use is the tank which is fine with me; I'd rather start from scratch anyway.
The plan is to start with fish and maybe get into a little coral when I can afford to buy enough live rock to support it. My girlfriend wants a "Nemo fish" whatever that is and I'm leaning toward a puffer. Something tells me the puffer's gonna eat the "Nemo fish" which is fine with me but I'll have to do a little research on that to keep the GF happy. Unfortunately the fish I'm interested in include sharks, puffers, stingrays and octopus which seem to be members of the "we don't get along well with others club". She seems to like the flashy bright colored ones so we may end up with 2 tanks if this one goes well. One thing's for sure I'll be getting an octopus even if it requires it's own tank.
Well, I probably won't post much for a while because I'll be spending most of my time doing research but thought I'd say Hi. If into modified Subaru's, some of you may know me from the IWSTI.com forum. |

| Welcome. First of all welcome!
You will find a ton of info here. The first thing you'll learn here is TAKE IT SLOOOOOWWWWW. Your right about the puffer eating the clown fish. Check out the posts here on starting a new tank. If you plan on adding coral someday the fish you buy today will need to be reef compatible or you'll be spending a lot of money feeding your fish coral.
Good Luck!

| Sharks, rays, and octo's need some intensive care
best to start with some easier to keep reef safe fish such as clownfish damsels chromis and what not......then if you decide to add coral you will be fine. Many puffers may need a bigger tank than a 72 gallon.
same with sharks and rays, they need like 250 gals minimum. <- Period
BTW, welcome to 3reef!
Oh, and a "Nemo Fish" is a clownfish, almost everyone has one |

| Thank guys, If this tank goes well I may get a bigger tank. Not sure when though because I'm looking at buying a house in a year or so and don't want deal with moving a 200gal tank and/or risk losing a HUGE investment in fish. I'll start with some "wussy" fish to keep the GF happy and probably get another 70ish gal tank for an octopus or something more intriguing than a clownfish.
I'm getting the tank next weekend so I've got about 2 months to research, decide on fish and figure out what direction I want to take with the tank. If I had my way I'd get an octopus and a puffer and feed it Nemo for lunch but my GF won't have it. |

I don't know why, but I find it funny reading people's signatures on this site because it's all aquarium stuff. I'm used to reading lists of tubos, hp and suspension mods. Car stuff seems more natural to me, maybe I'll list my mods on this site too
