Default Hello from MOFIB

I'll keep it short, I tend to register on any new site I stumble across lately I'm Matt Pedersen, co-founder of MOFIB (MarineBreeder.org), actively pursuing the spawining of marine fish as a "full time" hobbyist! I've spawned around a dozen species in the last couple years, and have successfully reared Onyx Perculas, Banggai Cardinalfish and Greenbanded Gobies to date. Have come "awefully close" to sucessful rearings on Mandarins, Bluestreak Cardinals and Bluebar Dottybacks...hopefully a couple of those will go into the "successfully reared" column by the end of 2008.

Just a bit of background, I've been on just about every side of the fence as it pertains to the aquarium industry, having worked in multiple shops as well as running a wholesale operation and hatchery. Being a "professional hobbyist" with a "real job" in a different line of work seems to fit my lifestyle and bank account a little better

Anyway, if I post nothing else, let me leave you with this. Consider that the Banggaii Cardinalfish is one of the easist marine fish to spawn and rear. Then consider that in 2007 they were listed as an Endangered Species on the IUCN Redlist. And now consider that it's well into 2008 and as recently as this past weekend my local shop had $19.99 wild caught Banggais.

Things are going to have to change, and the breakthroughs that will keep marine fish a viable part of the hobby will, in large parts, be made by dedicated hobbyists. Do your part and if nothing else, demand captive bred fish.

FWIW,

Matt

I'm pretty well tied up 110% with MOFIB, but I make sure I'm easy to find when fish breeding questions pop up

BTW, I found myself here while browsing the JARC (Joliet Area Reef Club) website...figured I should check this site out (it's on their "Favorite Links" page).

Just as a warning... Matt also bans people (excuse me, gives them "read only" accounts) just for having the nerve to say something he doesn't particularly agree with... and it doesn't even have to be on his site/forum. I was "banned" for only truthful information (albeit unpopular information) I posted/said on one of my own, entirely unrelated, websites that had/has absolutely nothing to do with him or MOFIB. And to think... I had thought they might be different than RC. Oh well...

PM me if you really want to know (goes for anyone). I like/respect Matt Rogers and this forum, so I don't want to "cause a scene" here. But you can probably guess... it's just more hypocrisy and BS (typical reef hobby nonsense).
