| Hello from Missouri! Just saying hey! Great forum you all have here, and some very good info. I'm 44, and getting back into the marine aquarium hobby after almost 20 years. Man have things changed!! Anyway, here's my new tank. It's a 110 gal, being cycled with fish, Fiji rock, and chaeto algae. Nothing fancy as far as equipment goes, just a cannister filter for mechanical filtration, large hang-on venturi skimmer, and a home-made hang-on 8 gallon wet/dry filter/refugium. Three large power heads provide current, and filter flow. Lighting is via one 400 watt MH 10K, and a fluorescent on the refugium (where the chaeto resides). I'm sure many things will change as the tank advances, but for now everything seems to be working well. I'm understanding that many people don't cycle with fish any more, but I guess I'm still a tad "old school"! I'm open to suggestions, and hope to learn a lot here!

| Hello and welcome to 3reef!
Best of luck with your tank...and yes alot has changed since I first started my saltwater endeavor back in the big hair days of the 80's Hahahhaa
I would invest in a protein skimmer and maybe even ditch the cannister. Also, you may want to add more light to your tank in the near future! It will depend alot on what you end up doing though as far as if you decide to add corals ro not and what kinds. _________ 125gal.w/Mag9.5 return(dual megaflow)>Mag7 pump Aqua Cev180skimmer.Wave2k Hamilton Reefstar(2)250watthqi(mh)pend.a Yellow, Naso Tang Red Lip Blenny Percula Clown Demoiselles Niger Trigger F. +1 on what CR said, if you whant to go with corals, the basic needs are, good lighting and good water flow, and of course good filtration. _________ *Since 12/2002 40 gal. 85 lbs live rock. 3" fiji Live sand.wet dry filter and prizm protein skimmer. 192 power compacts

| Don't forget to get a good test kit to check water parameters and maintain a constant temperature around 78degrees for the ideal benefit and enjoyment and success of your livestock! |

| Thanks for the tips! As stated in my first post, I do have a good protein skimmer on it, but yes, I probably will ditch the cannister soon.
Is 400 watts of halide not enough for corals? Geez...my wife says it looks like someone is welding in the living room now! Should I add a second light? The plans are for a few corals, but not a whole lot. We would like a few fish, some anemones, mushrooms, and other small inverts too. I'll definitely look forward to all of your bits of advice along the way. |

| | 3reef Moderator | 400W is perfect for a 110G tank but the spread of light of a MH is usually 2 feet square. So you should have at least 2 400w side by side.

Thanks Jason! That brings up a good lighting question, but I'll post that in the proper area. |
