Default Hello Folks

Hello,

i just stumbled on this forum today after searching for a DIY overflow arrangement.
Anyway, i have been keeping fish for several years, although i'm new to marines.
I only started with marines about 3 months ago when a relative gave me a badly set up, badly planned and badly running system.
I've been slowly tidying the tank up since then and it seems to be running OK, so far.

My Marine set up is as follows

Aqua One 220litre tank
1x 1000lph caninster filter
2 x seio 820 internal pumps
1 x aquaclear 400 powerhead
~10kg live rock
Red Sea Prizm Skimmer
Aqua One Light Unit 2x30W bulbs
2x Arcadia Lighting Controllers with 30w bulbs with reflectors

Livestock
2x Clark Clowns
1 x Perc Clown
1 x Condy Anemone
6 red leg hermits
6 turbo Snails

Ok, that's about it.
My main plans are the installation of a sump, upgrade of Skimmer, Upgrade of Lighting.

And once again, Hello All.

PLease feel free to comment on my set up.

Chris

Welcome to 3reef ChrisO!
Yeah, you definitely want to go with stronger lighting!!! And your filter though Red Sea Prizm is not a bad skimmer, the stronger the better especially with a substantial bioload!
Before delving into the world of lighting and skimmers-I would strongly suggest researching various types of skimmers and lighting choices that will better suit your needs.
Think of what you would like to have in your tank a couple months from now even a year from now. Based on your selection, you will be better prepared to properly select the right skimmer and lighting for your set-up without going overboard financially. I assure you, based on my past experiences, you don't want to cut corners, nor do you want to spend money you don't have to because you purchased lighting that doesn't work with the types of coral(s) or Tridanca Clams you wish to keep only to have to buy a new lighting scheme a few months down the road!
May I suggest a Aqua C skimmer as they are one of the best line of skimmers on the market IMO! And as for the lighting, I love the Metal Halides, whether it be a pendant or a whole fixture. With the lighting comes variables which you need to decide upon before selecting( ie. bulb color-kelvin, and wattage-PAR).
Well, this is basically it in a nut shell! Do some research and you can never read enough about the saltwater hobby to educate yourself and be better prepared for what lies ahead as you will find out that their are many ups and downs that come with a saltwater tank...Good luck and feel free to ask questions!!! Many knowledgeable people here at 3reef to guide you and help ya along the way!!!!!!

Hi there, thanks for the hints.
I have seen a skimmer and MH light unit for sale 2nd hand that i am thinking of buying. I've built myself a DIY overflow, based on the thread that first brought me to this forum and tested it tonight (it worked like a charm incidentally)

All going to plan i should have MH lighting, a better skimmer and a nice sump system up and running inside the next month.

i'm not going to change any of my livestock over this period. I'm just going to let them get on with it.
Chris
