| Hello and welcome to 3reef!
Fish for fresh water...
Their are many nice suitable cichlids for you to get started in the tropical fish hobby! You may even want to explore further and get your feet wet in African Cichlids!!!!!
As for tropical South and Central American cichlids goes, Rams, Firemouths, Green Terrors, Texas, Green and Gold Severums, Jack Dempsey's, Jewels and Acara's are some of the more popular species of cichlids that you may want to explore.

| I used to have a pictus cat and an iridescent shark along with a albino channel cat.
Not real colorful but very active.
Good luck with your decision. |

| Hi and welcome. Have you checked out Discus fish- they are very different looking. Also when I had my fresh water I had a black ghost knife fish. Very awesome fish- completely different then another fresh water fish I have ever seen.
Here's a pic:
I had mine -Casper was his name- for about 4 years before he got to big for my tank and died. Give him a cave or PVC pipe to hide in. They are an excellent fish. I would def. recommend him. Look him up on google or something and I'm sure you could get a ton of info.
