| Substrate in Main Reef Tank My new project has been done with much research. I am currently running with no substrate in my main tank. Live rock only. My fuge has is loaded with older live sand, which I hope to populate with Grunge Plus "www.garf.org".I have 2 mangrove plants with some wire like green stuff which my LFS which is very good recommended and is doing very well. Makes me wonder why!!!
What will I miss with no substrate in main tank??? |

| To me the biggest thing you're going to miss is dependent on what livestock you intend to keep. Sand sifters, inverts. I'm no expert by any means but I would think that even a small amount of Live sand would help out and give you a broader range in livestock. _________ 55 gal All-glass 760w MH

| Well...IMO the pros of sand outweigh the cons. I love the way a tank looks with nice clean sand. (I have a DBS and once and a while I will buy a cup or two of new sand, suck some "dirty" sand out of the top of my tank and add the new sand...kinda cheating but hey.) Also with more sand you will have more biological filtration not to mention all the little critter that will help feed your tank.
BESIDES...its hard to find a coral reef without any sand in the ocean I know...the argument can be made otherwise but...you get the idea. _________ Tank Specs:

| I agree with Bruce, Its biological advantages out weight the cons. Even if you decide to only have half an inch of sand. The sand is a part of the biological filtration system. _________ 9YR OLD 90G 30G w/d Mag18 150G skimmer 692w MH,yel&kole tang, foxface, midas&convict blenny,B&G chromies,Blk/yel fin chromie blackcap, nemo, neon goby,6line; Blastomussa Merleti,Acan ,BUBBLE,Torch,LTA, Goniopora(2), Acropora(2),Brain, Moon, assort zoas, yel& G star polyps, R&G open brain, P&B ricordia, montiporas, cup&candy corals, enias,B/G mush, flower ane(2), cherry red mussa, dusters, cleaning crew |
