Default Southdown/Yardright

Does anyone know where I can find Southdown/Yardright Tropical Play sand in the DC Metro, Baltimore, NJ, PA area. I have done a ton of research and called a ton of home depot's and can't find it anywhere. Current information regarding the current availability of the product would be great!??!

Thanks,
Mike

HI Mike!

I just went through that same exercise

After consulting with some Local club people, I got the name of the sand (and got the sand) from Home Depot...call around first tho, cause some HD's have it seasonally only. I got mine at the Home Depot in Wilmington, DE.

It is called

Old Castle Stone Tropical Play Sand
It has a blue label and says right on the bag...
"from the Carribean". It has small shells in it.

WARNING!!!! Despite what you may read on the internet that you don't need to wash this sand....PLEASE DO! I did not per some advice that said washing it would rinse out the buffering effect of the aragonite...but my tank would not clear even after a week. Luckily, I had just set up my tank and did not even have rock yet. I tore it out and put new in

Birdlady,

Thanks for the info, I guess I will continue to call around.

When was it that you actually got the sand from wilmington, DE?

You don't happen to have the exact UPC# from the bags that you got, do you? *It really comes in handy when talking to some of these Home Depot people.

I spoke with nearly every Home Depot from here (DC) to NYC and can't find that stuff (Southdown, Yardright, or Oldcastle). A few of the HD's i talked to said that they only have Pavestone Tropical Play Sand...and I assumed, since I havent heard anything about that brand, that it was no good for aquarium purposes...Is this correct? Also, a few HD's said that Wal-Mart may now carry Old Castle Tropical Play Sand....any luck with them? PLEASE LET ME KNOW...I've about had enough of waiting on hold with Home Depot's and having to hear the stupid commercial over and over!

Thanks,
Mike

Hey there!

I just got the sand about 3 weeks ago. Sorry, I don't have the UPC....when you call Home Depot make sure they go look to see if it is there. The one store I went to the computer said they had over 100 bags....but they couldn't physically find it.. >

I don' t know anything about the other sand you mentioned, and no I had not thought about Walmart...but I bet they only carry it in the summer if they carry it at all...

The HD in Wilmington is right off of I-95 if you were considering a drive....literally right off the exit and you can get right back on there as well.

So I went to my LFS the other day and told the guy I was going to use Southdown. He told me not to do it because his tank gets cloudy all the time. Any time a little sand is kick up his tank is cloudy for hours. I asked him if he rinsed it and he said that you can't really rinsed sand. I was able to rinse the sand in my fresh water tank and it was fine. Is this cloudiness gonna be a problem if I rinse the sand thoroughly? I would love to have sand in the tank but I don't want problems.

Tell me all the pros again so I will sway back to the sand idea again.
