I currently have a sandbed of 3 inches(CaribSea Live Sand). I want to increase the bed to about 5 inches. Is it ok to just add the additional sand ontop of the bed that already exsists? I will be adding new CaribSea Live Sand.

Just add CaribSea dry sand what ever type you do add more sand no need to waste money on the wet stuff , That being said its not a good idea to add on top of an existing established DSB, Better of removing 2 inches (:

IMO you'd be better of pulling 2 inches off of the existing 3 inches of old sand. A DSB is a snake and you would not be the first person it had bitten

I think he is trying to say that if you screw with the sand, you might inadvertently release some of the anaerobic bacteria and have a spike in the ammonia. When I took out my CC and replaced with sand, I put some nitrifying bacteria in to offset whatever ammonia spike that was to come. I had plenty of live rock and saved my water and everything turned out fine.
