Default DSB Q's

just a few questions about BSD's

i have my main display tank with 1/4 inch sand bed my filtration is threw bio balls im thinkig about setting up a DSB in the filter.

would a DSB need any lighting on it?

would a DSB work well with a bio ball wet/dry set up< from what ive read they could be but im not totally sure>?

what kind of maintanence is involved? <im under the impression theres none till it fills up>

clean up crew on top? if so what would u use?

i dont plan on doing this till i know whatim gettin my self in for i have some sand left over from my last tank would be a waste to throw it out

-thnx guys for any help

No lights for DSB, only for refuge.
Yes, Bio Balls do Ammonia to nitrite/nitrite to Nitrate conversion. While DSB does those and Nitrate reduction if oxygen is prevented from reaching the bottom of DSB.
maintanence is minimal (as not to disturb bacteria growth)
Use hermits and snails like astrea. SS stars can also be used (i think dont take my word Yet with the star)

another Q about it all

when a DSB "crashes" or fills up what is the best way to change over the sand or do the required work to fix the problem

what should i expect to see when a DSB fills up? are there any early warning signs?

thnx guys

A DSB shouldnt crash if you dont dig your hands or a creature doesnt dig down into the anaerobic zone (usually dont) where toxic chemicals are produced by the bacteria and form pockets.
^ thats the early warning

Running carbon media will absorb the Toxic stuff that can leach out if a pocket of chemicals is released.
