Default Ant-hills in the sand
......all over the place.

When the say "live sand" I guess they're not kidding.

Obviously something in the sand (and it ain't ants) is causing these little hills to sprout up all over the place. Can this be considered sand stirring and is it normal. Has anyone come across a situation like this.

I'll post a pic or two a little later.......battery needs juice

Do you have snails in your tank, in particular, Nassarius? If so, they could be causing this to happen. I have sand trails throughout the tank. These type of snails travel under the sand. I also have a Sand Sifting snail which does the same thing as well.

It's not the snails.

There is life in the sand 100% sure. Matter of fact I can see vertical canals up against the glass (much like a cross-section view). I do see movement in these canals. Maybe some type of pod but too little to make out.

tiny white,blue,or red starfish breed in the sand.the ones that only get to be an inch.not asterinas.but i never saw them make mounds.also maybe hermits?just throwing some quesses out there.

Probably boring worms of some sort which are beneficial to your benthic area of your tank! I have many of these as well, which my Stingray seems to take a liking to. They are in my 125 gallon tank as well!

I have the exact same things in my tank, was always curious at what they were. I can also see the canals and there is also movement from time to time.

Well.....after a careful and prolonged watch they're pods of some sort. Good stuff me thinks

They're way too small for me to take any sort of picture so I've taken two shots of the mounds themselves. One with flash the other without:
