just something my LFS told me about the floating arm hydrometers. He said that they need to be calibrated every week or so by soaking them in fresh water for at least a few hours. I just bought the deep six hydrometer and it showed that salinity was higher than what my floating one was saying.

Never felt very secure using one.

Just running tests back to back gave different answers.

Guess some better then others.

Refractometer is way to go....

My hydrometers and refractometer read exactly the same. So yes, the hydrometer is accurate, if you take care of it.

What about the floating ones? I have one from my beer makign kit, and it seems to work fine, but the floating arm one and the beer one are about .003 different. Looks like a refractometer is in my future...

Funny, somehow I bet a lot of the equipment and skills in beer making are the same as reef tanks!
