Just to mess with you even more. IO and most other manufacturers assume you run the tank a little hypo-salinic(sp?) in the 1.20 range so a 150 gal bucket will only make 130 something.

I gave up on measuring cups ages ago. I initially eyeball it and have an old beer mug to get to my specific gravity. Of course, it's easier to say that doing 100 gal water changes.

Yes Blade that is very true. Glad you pointed it out. IICR it is 1.023 = 31 ppt is what IO gives. An old FOT SG

Being a cook for 20 years . I have seen alot of measuring cups and they are all different !!!! So stick to the same cup and all will be OK !! Buy 2 if you have to , that way when one gets old u have one to replace it !!! Even when i buy a over priced measuring cup for work, on the box it said to modify my recipes to mach the cup ......

I have also has the same problem, mostly when using IO. I use Reef crystals for my nano and it pretty much measures out correctly, but the IO that goes in a 240 is always short per 1/2 cup. I wonder if directions are meant for dry salt (no humidity expansion after opening package) and packed down for IO and maybe loose for Reef crystals.
Never-the-less, weights would be nice per brand.
Anyone have any experiance with Oceanic sea salt? I was thinking of giving it a try.

I use one bag of Coralife salt to 50 gallons of water - I always check it to be safe but so far I've never had an inconsistency

Default Maybe a better meter is more important

HI,
I was measuring my salt on a 500.00 dollar scale at work to see what one level cup equals , and found that it can be off considerably, based on level or heaping, another problem is the I found my meter at home was way off almost .04 I was reading around 1.023 on a nice SP grav device at work and my trusty plastic one at home said 1.027. Man thats a big difference. So I ordered a temp compensated one for 49.99 at marine depot today.
I ve heard the plastic ones are dicy but thats nuts..HOLY SNAKE PooP.

Kill a couple verts and thats more than the cost of the meter.

Doug

Hey acouple vert can add up

Default it gets worse

Hi,
well i am really disapointed in my plastic spec grav device its just crap, I did soak it overnight and it did a little better, I always rinse and dry it well, I am begining to think that maybe the plastic floats higher when really dry it seems to work better if left wet overnight.
Maybe its bubbles mabe its the plastic.
Mine going in the trash, it reads 1.205 and my high end one at work says 1.018 thats a really big spread, I checked my good one at work with controls and its right on.
Doug
if you have a plastic I'd seriously consider replacing it ASAP mine was only a couple months old.

this is the bad one>>>>
