Not sure why you wouldn't put sand in your fuge, it is another area in your system that can contain beneficial bacteria. If you have the space in your fuge then add 5 inches or so and this will help no end in keeping your nitrates nice and low.

I also have some live rock and chaeto in mine and it works a treat.

[Edit] Just noticed on your signature that you have a new tank in progress, do you have your Koralia pumps yet, if not then Hydor are releasing some new ones next month to coincide with their new wave machine. If you haven't already purchased them then you may want to sit tight for a month or so.

_________

80gal with live rock (35kg/70lbs), 30gal sump, refugium with live rock, chaeto and DSB, V2 skimmer, Fluidized Reactor, T5 lighting (6 tubes), 4 x Koralia 3's.

I have wal-mart clay kitty litter for the base, chaetomorpha and a couple pieces of live rock. Works like a charm.

I have some live rock rubble and caulerpa in mine, no sand or mud yet, I'm still trying to decide which would be better for my system.
