I decided to add a 10 gallon refugium to my 40 gallon tank. I bout a HOB overflow and a powerhead. The power head is probably good for about 400-450 GPH from where my refugium is. The problem ikeep having is that my overflow is filling up my refugium to the point that it is beginning to overflow. Does this just mean my powerhead is too weak? Let me know if there is anything else that you need to know about my setup

Do you have a valve to regulate flow from your o-flow to your fuge?

Yup, sounds like your powerhead is just not powerful enough. How many GPH does your overflow drain? You need to match it (or get pretty close to it).

Yup, a valve would work too. Probably a better idea for a 40 gallon tank.

Mission really has the answer here I think, in a reef tank, you need a total flow of about 10x the gallonage. You would be running about 400 gallons per hour if you put a regulator on the OF. You do not want to go overboard IMO just because some corals don't like too much flow. And in a 40 gallon tank, matching what I believe is at least 600 gallons per hour (OF) will cause quite a stir, literally. That just what I would do, but, like you, I am a newbie. I would wait for confirmation.
